DGNSS of Korea, South Korea's industrial positioning Leading to the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Satellite Navigation Central Office

DGPS Overview

GPS satellite signal includes various error components caused by multiple factors before reaching the receiver at ground level. As a method of eliminating such errors, DGPS is used. The DGPS-based system produces corrected information by observing the error components of GPS from the base stations located nationwide to be broadcast to the users. It can be used to calculate the location, speed and time information in all weather conditions, and is applied to various fields including the navigation system as well as traffic, disaster, geographic, survey, agricultural and forestry management.

Basic Organization of the DGPS-based system

In order to provide positioning services for safe navigation of ships entering and leaving ports and passing through narrow channels and for on-land navigation, the Central Office (Daejeon), 17 Reference Stations (RS) and 17 Integrity Monitoring Stations (IM) are in operation. The locations of the RS and IM are also used as national satellite reference points.

Central Office

They monitor and control the operation the DGPS RS and IM nationwide and monitor and analyze the DGPS use in real-time to broadcast warning messages to users.

Reference Station

They receive GPS satellite signals from the exact, known locations and compare the measured range and the known range to obtain the error value. Then, the error value is broadcast to users in real time via medium-wave broadcasting (283.5~325kHz) according to the international standard format (RTCM SC-104).

Integrity Monitoring Station

They monitor the reference station signals from a constant point from the reference station. In case the satellite error correction signal exceeds the limit or there is an abnormal satellite signal, it sends a warning message to the Central Office.
