Managing the Forest Fire Region in Eastern Oregon

For the helicopters of the U.S. Department of Land Management, DGPS receivers are as essential as fuel. By law, all helicopters used by the government must be equipped with DGPS receivers for air navigation. However, the Department of Land Management uses DGPS receivers for an additional purpose, which is map-making. Whenever there is a fire in the eastern Oregon, the surveying technicians of the Department take a DGPS receiver. When the fire is extinguished, they take to the location of fire DGPS receivers and a program that can save the location information based on the average speed of the helicopter.

This system saves the destination information to be transferred to the office computer. Using these data, calculation is performed for accurate presentation of the location of fire. Also, the data are saved in connection with the GIS-based system to be used in fire prevention projects such as installation of fences.
